What is a Green Smoothie Made Of?

You can make a smoothie green by adding fresh kale, spinach, or other greens-even broccoli! This creamy green pina colada smoothie is made green by adding a greens powder.

I love using greens powder because it is so readily available and easy to add.

What’s the Best Vegan Greens Powder?

The best vegan greens powder is the one you’re actually going to use!

The good people at Ora Organic sent me a sample of their greens powder, so I wanted to share it here.

Easy Being Green

I really love the Ora Organic brand. Everything about them is in line with what I believe.

Oh, and I’m not being paid to say this. I really want to share with you guys a quality brand I can get behind here.

Ora was started in the United States-California to be exact. They pride themselves to create quality products from organic, ethically sourced (VEGAN!!!) ingredients.

They have a wide range of supplements, including an algae-based omega 3 spray, a lichen based vitamin d3 (yay!) and even plant-based collagen.

They haven’t sent me the collagen, but being in my *gasp* mid-thirties, that will be the first thing I order from their website!!!

What’s in a Greens Powder?

The greens powder I used for this recipe from Ora Organic has so many great greens packed in! It contains:

  • Organic Barley Grass Juice powder
  • Organic Wheat Grass Juice powder
  • Organic Alfalfa Leaf Powder
  • Organic Oat Grass Powder
  • Organic Spinach
  • Organic Kale
  • Organic Broccoli
  • Organic Cabbage
  • Organic Chlorella
  • Organic Spirulina
  • Organic Dandelion leaf
  • Organic Parsley
  • Organic Cilantro
  • Organic Celery
  • Organic Green Bell Pepper
  • Organic Leek
  • Organic Dulse
  • Organic Sea Kelp

One of the main things I love about this greens powder is that it contains such a wide variety of greens. Notably, the wheatgrass juice powder and dulse and sea kelp would be a challenge for me to include on my own.

You could absolutely include these greens into a smoothie yourself without using a greens powder-but I challenge you to include everything from up above in one cup of goodness!

And, the people at Ora even have a chef on their team! This greens powder tastes delicious-even on its own, with hints of lemon, orange, and monk fruit.

What Makes Green Smoothies Creamy?

Here I’m using canned coconut milk to add richness, nutrition, staying powder-and deliciousness!!

You can opt for another dairy-free milk if you prefer, but the coconut flavor will be lost and you will instead have a pineapple-mango smoothie.

Nothing wrong with that!! I bet it will still taste delicious!

How to Make Green Smoothies Sweeter

I’m using frozen pineapple and frozen mango to add flavor and sweetness to this creamy green smoothie.

There are so many options when it comes to sweetening a smoothie.

One of my favorite ways to add sweetness to a green smoothie is to use whole, pitted medjool dates! They have a neutral flavor, and add micronutrients and fiber to your smoothie-instead of empty calories.

There is even a date powder you can buy for just this purpose! I like this one from Amazon. It’s a good price, organic, lasts forever, and is the perfect replacement for brown sugar in baking!

Other sweeteners you could consider using to Make Your Smoothie Sweeter are:

  • Erythritol-a sugar alcohol that has no calories and is natural
  • Maple Syrup
  • Coconut sugar
  • Banana
  • stevia
  • sucralose (splenda)
  • molassis

Ingredients for Creamy Green Pina Colada Smoothie

I kept it really simple here for you guys. I wanted an easy recipe that you can quickly make in the morning before you (and the kids) head out the door.

For this green smoothie recipe you’ll need:

  • Frozen mango and pineapple chunks
  • 160ml can of coconut milk (the small can)
  • greens powder of your choice
  • water

How to Make Green Smoothies Less Chunky

I’ve been using my Vitamix for years now to make delicious, creamy smoothies. When you use a high powdered blender, the results will be ultra-creamy, less chunky, and easily digestible.

Any blender can get this job done, but when you have a high powdered one, the results are better.

Using a greens powder really helps as well. Depending on the raw greens you choose, some will blend better than others.

For example, if you are using up broccoli and kale stocks, they won’t blend as well with the rest of the smoothie if you don’t have a high powdered blender like a Vitamix.

When you’re using a greens powder, all you really need to blend is frozen fruit. Most typical blenders can handle that job no problem!

***Calorie information is an estimate.

This smoothie makes enough for two people to share a snack sized portion.

If you are extra hungry, have it all to yourself!

Can you Pre-make a Creamy Green Smoothie?

Yes! I will often make a large batch (doubling the above recipe) then portion the smoothie out into smaller jars.

Place these jars in the fridge so they are ready to go the next day!

You will need to give them a little shake-separation is normal.

How Long can you Store a Green Smoothie?

Creamy GREEN Pina Colada smoothie with slices of pineapple and shredded coconut, placed on a white cutting board with a blue background

You can drink this green smoothie throughout the day. No worries if you pack this to work with you and you leave it until the end of the day to finish on your way home.

I’ve stored my green smoothie recipe for up to 3 days in the fridge.

Can you Freeze a Green Smoothie?

I would NOT recommend freezing this creamy green smoothie recipe.

Coconut milk, in general, doesn’t do well when it’s frozen-it tends to separate and doesn’t have the same texture as pre-freeze.

Also, there isn’t really a purpose behind freezing this smoothie. For the amount of time it takes to whip one of these green smoothies up, you’re better off just making it fresh.
