5 Steps to a Healthy Immune system

These actionable steps to quickly boost your immune system will help you take back control and help your body’s immune system work to it’s best ability to help keep you healthy.

Here are 5 things you can do today to boost your immune system now.

1. Your diet.

We all know the phrase an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but how often do we really follow this advice? Now more than ever it’s important to feed our bodies in a way that is health-promoting. Here’s what you should be eating every single day:

  • Vegetables
  • Fruit
  • Plant-based Protein
  • Whole Grains
  • Nut’s/Seeds

Every single day we should be getting 6-7 servings of vegetables. You want to make sure you’re eating green leafy vegetables as part of these 6-7 servings as well.

Some easy ways to do this are throwing frozen spinach into a soup or stew, blending up some kale into your smoothie, or even having a side of broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage or salad with lunch and dinner.

In addition to our veggies, we need to be getting in a lot of fruits. Especially the dark blue and red berries.

These are packed with antioxidants and other health-promoting micronutrients. Try having some frozen blueberries in your oatmeal in the morning.

Protein is vital to how our bodies heal. While you are in no danger of being protein deficient on a plant-based diet, as long as you are eating enough, the following foods are very high in protein and fiber:

  • beans
  • chickpeas
  • lentils
  • peas
  • edamame
  • tofu

Try having chickpeas, lentils, black beans, kidney beans, pinto beans, tofu, and tempeh daily.

2. Avoid ALL animal products including meat, dairy, and eggs

Animal products contribute to inflammation in our bodies. When our immune system is triggered by an inflammatory response from the food we eat, then it is not working to fight off true threats like the coronavirus. Eat plant-based whole foods to keep your immune system running smoothly.

3. Sleep is life

Sleep is how our bodies re-charge and recover. My best tips for getting enough sleep are to stay away from tech such as your phone-especially if your reading the news or other disturbing content.

Read a book, cuddle with your partner, have a bath. Relax and de-stress before you get ready to sleep. Try and turn in by 10pm.

4. Exercise every single day

This is absolutely going to help you sleep better as well. Even 10 minutes a day is better than nothing.

I always encourage my coaching clients to start incorporating at least 10 minutes every single day if they are not used to being active.

This habit will soon turn into 15, 20, 30 or even more activity daily.

Exercise will help decrease stress, increase sleep, and deal with anxieties from the coronavirus and other life stresses.

5. Reduce your stress

We are busy. We lead very busy lives, and especially at a time of uncertainty like this, we take on a lot of stress.

This week I want you to focus on gratitude for all the good things that are happening right now in your life. I want you to take time for yourself every single day to reflect on how you’re doing.

When we allow ourselves time to really check-in and experience our feelings, then we can actually deal with them. If journaling is for you-do that. Whatever ways you have for dealing with stress, now is the time for self-care.

Final Thoughts

With the coronavirus being such a new disease and with so little information about it, it can cause you to feel helpless, anxious and fearful.

By focusing on actionable steps to quickly boost your immune system at home, along with proper handwashing, and staying away from large gatherings, you can feel like you are doing everything possible and in your control.

I hope this video helps you, and I wish you all the health and happiness you can handle.
