Self-Talk for Weight Loss: Are you Doing it WRONG?

Image shows a woman stretching in the rain with thought bubbles that read "I'll never reach my goal" "Of course my jeans don;'t fit" "I don't deserve to be happy"

If you struggle to stick to your diet plan, then you’re probably not using self-talk for weight loss the right way! Let’s fix that today, k?

Let Your Feelings Guide You

Sometimes you don’t “hear” yourself talk. Even though we have a constant murmur in the back of our minds, we don’t always pay attention to it!

This can be really dangerous as you can imagine. What you don’t know can hurt you. The self-talk that we do has a direct and immediate effect on our actions, and so when you’re trying to adopt a new healthy way of eating negative self-talk quickly turns into self-sabotage.

How to Know if Your Self-Talk is Negative

An easy fix for this is to be aware of your feelings. They will tell you if your self-talk is positive or negative.

If you’re noticing negative feelings, you need to explore why you’re feeling bad.

Did you catch a glimpse in the mirror and call yourself fat or some other disrespectful slur? Pull-on your favorite jeans after they went through the dryer and felt the squeeze?

Small triggers send us into a pattern of negativity.

Why Self-Talk Affects Weight loss

This routine eats away at our self-confidence and creates more negative self-talk. If we aren’t careful, this vicious cycle will rob us of our happiness, and even worse, it can rob us of our future.

Soon we start believing the things we tell ourselves are true. Terrible things that we wouldn’t dream of saying to anyone else.

“You’re never going to lose weight”

“You don’t deserve to be happy”

“You’re not strong enough to change”

If this is resonating with you on a deep level, I understand. I’ve been there!

When we try a diet and we end up failing we carry that failure with us throughout our lives. It begins to colour or attempts at further weight loss or even starting any kind of healthy habit like drinking more water. We start telling ourselves that we won’t succeed and that we shouldn’t even try. This is a recipe for disaster when it comes to our self-esteem.
